 ~  Newsletter No. 278, April 2025 ~

Hola Volunteers and Supporters –

We’ve had an incredible month filled with activity, teamwork, and exciting progress. Here’s a look at what’s been happening and what’s ahead!

Environmental Fair with Entreamigos

This month we were thrilled to take part in the Environmental Fair hosted by Entreamigos—it was a fantastic event! Huge thanks to Deanna, Elvia, Odette, Ulises, and Nick for running the show so beautifully, and a special shoutout to Cristian for generously letting us borrow his cast net.

One of the highlights was watching the kids role-play the journey of the sea turtles: they wore masks, “hatched” from the nest, and navigated their way to the ocean—learning firsthand the challenges turtles face and how they find their way back to nest as adults. Everyone’s favorite moment came when we cast a net over the kids to show just how easily turtles can get entangled; the reactions were unforgettable.

We also debuted our new paper stickers at the fair—our designs were a huge hit, and knowing they’ll naturally break down over time makes us feel just a little better about spreading the word!
A Personal Note from Camp

I’ve officially moved back into camp for the season and want to give a heartfelt thank you to all of our winter renters. Your support has meant the world to us—everything above the cost of covering our own rent and utilities goes directly into conservation efforts.

Thank you, winter renters:
Brenda & Phil, Marco & Susan and kids, and Barbera & Luis.

Spotlight on Lachlan: Our Youngest Champion

We are beyond excited to share the story of amazing Lachlan! He first reached out to us two years ago to adopt two nests, becoming our youngest supporter—and was the first person to adopt two nests in one season. We were thrilled when he visited our nursery with his family recently, and we’re so grateful to Ulises for giving him the grand tour. To our delight, Lachlan has now adopted four more nests for this season!

Having the support of people like Lachlan and his family fills our hearts and gives us the strength to keep moving forward. It’s incredibly uplifting to know that, even in a world full of challenges, the next generation is already stepping up to make a difference.

Here’s a message from Lachlan himself:

“Hello! I am Lachlan, and I just have a couple of thoughts I would like to share with you. Sea turtles have been around for millions of years and once I learned about them, I realized they had abilities beyond my wildest thoughts. As soon as I learned they were endangered, I felt it was my life’s mission to do my part in keeping them alive. But I needed a way to help.

I set up a lemonade stand in the summer of 2023 and raised money through that to donate. I managed to collect over $150. I then started researching places to donate all this money and found it would be best to donate it to Project Tortuga. And was I right! Before finding Project Tortuga, I visited Mexico with friends and as soon as I found out that sea turtles nested in Mexico, it became even more reason to donate to the project. I eventually ended up adopting two nests, and it was so worth the work. After all, it was the least I could do to help the turtles the best I can.

I visited the sea turtle nursery in San Pancho a couple of weeks ago and Mr. Ulises taught me about the work they do. It’s not an easy, throw-eggs-in-a-sand-box kind of job. Volunteers put in so much effort, and I would love to thank them for what they are doing for the world. Sea turtles are an endangered species, and Project Tortuga is doing even more than their part to help keep these beautiful creatures alive.

Thank you for reading,
-Lachlan Fairley”

Welcome, New Volunteers!

Lola Tiffany & Alex Sage (USA), Cat Reed (USA), Craig Nottage (UK), and Jen Teal (Mexico), and returning volunteer Trish Schmidt (USA)!

We’re so excited to have all of you joining the team!

Thank You, April Donors!

Shoutout to our awesome monthly donors — Bob Cole, Fay Chan, and Claudia Kroberger — we couldn’t do it without you!

Big thanks to all who pitched in this month — you help keep us moving forward! We’re happy to recognize: Alice Hobeika, the Fairley family (Lachlan, Christina, and Alister), Eve Rosenblum, and Richard Spotts!

A Big Win: Our New Trailer Arrives!

We’re thrilled to announce that our long-awaited trailer has finally arrived—thanks to the generosity of Mike and Johanne Sanders, and our Anonymous donor! While it unexpectedly showed up in pieces, our new volunteers, Lola and Alex, tackled the challenge like pros and got it assembled. This trailer is going to be a game changer for hauling sand and releasing hatchlings during peak season.

Riverbed Cleanup: Join Us Before the Rains!

Elvia is once again organizing the annual riverbed cleanups for May and June! This is a crucial time to remove trash and debris before the rainy season arrives. Once the rains come, everything left behind in the dry riverbeds gets washed downstream and into the ocean, where it can harm marine life and pollute the coastline. By helping now, you’re making a real difference for the environment and helping protect both local wildlife and our beaches.

If you’d like to get involved, please contact Elvia via WhatsApp at +52 322 117 1950 to find out how you can participate!
