Hola Volunteers and Supporters ~
Turtle wise: since the beginning of the 2021 nesting season on May first we have recorded and carefully relocated over 32 nests between May 1st and June 30th, while no nests had been taken by poachers which is a record in itself. May five nests and June twenty-seven nests.
Due to the ongoing pandemic and the concern for the safety of volunteers, members of the community, and tourists we will not be openly releasing hatchlings until the pandemic has come to a complete end. The reason is the box nursery must be totally operational, and we have a ready supply of hatchlings to release.
This humble request comes from the marine turtle adults and their hatchlings. Any white lights shining on the beach will blur our sense of direction and cause us to track in the direction of the house lights and away from the sea. We would like to thank the few beach residents that have changed their lights to amber or yellow colors. Remember, amber, yellow, and light red lights can be purchased at the Home Depot.
Since Joslin Carson is no longer one of our licensed volunteers or is living at the nursey facility, we can no longer care for orphaned, sick, or injured animals as we have done over the past several years. Being totally involved in the care of the marine turtle 24/7 is a large workload for our volunteers. Since we operate during the night, we need some time to rest during the day and cannot be involved in the care of other animals around the clock.
Weatherwise, daytime temperatures have been in the mid to high 80°, while nighttime temperatures have been in the mid 70°. Total rainfall for the year and all of June comes to 7.50 inches, a near record for June. Although there have been many tropical storms and hurricanes at sea, none of them have affected us - even hurricane Enrique was nothing.
A word of warning to all poachers and unlicensed individuals, we have received a special decree from the Mexican Government that give our local police and military the authority to arrest anyone found with marine turtle eggs, digging up a nest or handling hatchlings, a serious violation of federal law. Only licensed volunteers, certified by the Mexican Government and Grupo Ecológico can legally work with the marine turtles.

San Pancho’s waterhead is near empty and will not be replenished until a large amount of water flows under the town’s main bridge for at least two weeks, which may not happen until mid-August. If you feel that out-of-control building in San Pancho is causing a serious water shortage, you are on the mark. For example, for over sixty years in my hometown of Idyllwild there has been chronic water shortages. To overcome this problem the town has limited or controlled the number of water meters and will shut down all restaurants if needed. To build a new home you must purchase a meter from someone removing an old cabin for as much as $4,000.
The water level of the lagoon had been slowly dropping due to the closing of the old sewage plant, which had been refilling the lagoon with wastewater for decades. Although high waves between June 20th and 29th quickly refilled it with ocean water. Also, the evening smell of sewage is no longer a problem in front of town .
