Newsletter No. 256, June, 2023 ~ Grupo Ecológico
Hola Volunteers and Supporters ~
Starting on June 1st, we are covering the beach in search of nests, both on foot at sunup and several times at night by vehicle. To date we have found twelve nests, some nesting turtles, and hatchling tracks. Starting in July we will begin covering the beach three to four times a night.
I was driving off the beach in the buggy off the beach alongside the condo when the weld on the battery case broke, and the battery hit the road cracking it open. A day later we had the battery case rewelded and purchased a new battery, but our problems did not end there. Several days later the nine-year-old alternator shorted-out, we’ve had problems in the past years so, there was no loss in replacing it. The problem didn’t end there, on the first test run the break master cylinder totally failed, and we decided to completely rebuild the front brake system.
Our Adopt a Sea Turtle Nest program is off to a good start! For more information on the program go to the following link: https://www.project-tortuga.org/adopt-a-nest.html. This is a great gift opportunity for the turtle or nature lover in your life. Nests can also be adopted “in memory of” someone or “on behalf of a company”. Thank you for helping us reach our fundraising goals!
Here's exciting news for all our donors; Grupo Ecológico has applied for charity status with the IRS in the USA, and has partnered with an existing US charity, Travler.org. This means that starting now, you can take a US 501c3 tax deduction on donations to Grupo Ecológico! We can also offer US corporations and foundations tax exemption on their grants and contributions to Grupo Ecológico. We are waiting for the IRS to approve our own charity status, which may take several months. But starting now, you can still take a tax deduction for your donations to us by making them through Travler, a US charity that has supported Grupo Ecológico for several years. Click on this link to make a tax-deductible contribution to Grupo Eco.
June volunteers: Elvia Garcia, Taylor Kimbell, Karen Sorum and Hallie Loveridge, Blandine Clement and Nick Sanders. If interested, join us by going to our Volunteer application page, and please spread the word about our volunteering opportunity.
Weather-wise: May days temperatures were in the high 80°, while nighttime temps were in the high 70°. Over the past five months we received .51 inches of rain, average amount of rain by the end of May is normally 3.5 inches. We had one tropical hurricane, Adrian, and several others heading up the coast. First lightning was seen on the 26th, but no heavy rain yet. The beach sand had been so dry, it was nearly impossible to dig a nest hole.
We appreciate of the donations we’ve received from: Lynda Gilman, Ronald and Ann Walsh, Johanne Pouliot, Jennifer Nelsen, Susan Stephens, Susan Buttler, Paul Sowanick, Fernando Gonzalez Reyes, John Brock, Philip and Brenda Garrod, and Tim and Lisa Potrikus. Although despite our Adopt a Sea nests program and our 501c3, donations have fallen-off just as the program begins and we need donation the most. Our goal is to adopt 100 nests this season. Without your help our work would be difficult. Please help us if you can by contributing at our PayPal site, or for US citizens who want a tax deduction go to the Travler Paypal site and the funds will be forwarded to Grupo Eco.
I hope the .51 inches of rain this year is not a prelude to coming weather problems, in any case keep the use of water to a minimum. For me personally what is happening to the overall water crises is troubling. Keep in mind that San Pancho is at the very bottom of a twenty-five-mile square watershed. So, you would think we would have plenty of water the year around. That would be true providing we have sufficient rain, and if the plans to build an unlimited number of residents within our watershed is not curtailed.
The community does not have enough resources to out-flank a developer that has plans to build hundreds of homes with pools in and around San Pancho. Keep in mind this is not magic, our watershed receives only so much water each year, and every gallon pumped-out above San Pancho is a gallon lost. Mexico has water laws to protect communities like ours, make them work!!
