Sea Turtle Nesting Season Prep Update This past month has been a whirlwind of activity as we prepare for our upcoming nesting season. Our dedicated team has been hard at work finishing the nursery prep work. We've removed termite-damaged wood, painted and are replacing it with new wood, and repaired tears in our roof. We’ve fixed the sand collection buckets and prepped our ATV by sanding off and repainting rusted areas. Additionally, we are almost done with the tedious but very important task of cleaning and reinforcing our nest boxes, some of which have been in use for over a decade!
While we've been trialing alternatives to Styrofoam nest boxes, none have matched their ability to maintain consistent temperatures and moisture levels, both critical for successful incubation. Although we dislike Styrofoam, we're content with reusing our existing supplies as long as they will last rather than purchasing new ones or simply throwing the ones we purchased many years ago away. Here’s hoping technology catches up to necessity in time for us.
Donations Now Tax-Deductible Great news for our US supporters! Our new 501(c)(3) bank account and PayPal are fully functional, making all donations tax-deductible. Please consider supporting our mission by donating through the provided link.
Unique Father’s Day Gift Idea Looking for a unique Father’s Day gift? Adopt a nest for Dad! He'll receive a personalized adoption certificate via email. Once his nest is placed in the nursery, a nest badge will be placed with it in his honor. When the nest hatches, he will receive nest data, hatching results, and pictures of his hatchlings. A very special gift that keeps on giving.
Riverbed Cleanup Success We had a fantastic time participating in the riverbed cleanup this month. We removed a truckload of garbage, preventing it from washing into the ocean and harming our turtles. Keeping the riverbed clean is crucial, especially before the rainy season. Join us for the next cleanup on June 1st at 8 AM at the Rainbow Bridge.
Welcoming New Volunteers This month, we welcome our first volunteers of the 2024 nesting season: Michael Ross from Canada and Trish Schmidt from the US. As always, we are incredibly grateful to our year-round local volunteers. The work to save our sea turtles doesn’t stop at the end of our main nesting season. Without our volunteers, we would not exist.
Volunteer opportunities are still available for this nesting season. Visit our link to learn more or to sign up.
A huge thank you to all of our committed May team and volunteers: Frank Smith, Steve Raschke, Elvia Garcia, Nick Sanders, Karen Sorum, Hallie Loveridge, Deanna Covington, Ulises Ledesma González, Odette Brunel, Michael Ross, and Patricia Schmidt.
Thank You for Your Support A heartfelt thank you to everyone who rented our volunteer housing during the off-season. Your support helps us pay rent and maintain our operations. We couldn't continue our work without you! During May, we were grateful to receive donations from: Susan Stephens, Melissa McCann, Rosanne Shank, John Brock, Patricia Schmidt, and Sara Finnegan-Doyon.
Volunteers Needed for Outreach and Fundraising We need volunteers to lead our social media outreach and manage our fundraising efforts. If you or someone you know has skills in these areas and wants to help, please reach out via email.
Beach Patrol Monitoring Our beach patrol surveys will begin on June 1st. Here’s to a fantastic sea turtle nesting season!
Weather-wise: May daytime temperatures ranged around the low to mid-80°, and nighttime temperatures were in the high-60° to mid-70°. No rain in May. The total for the year came to 1.76 inches. Beautiful weather throughout the month.
